WILLITS — Bryan Alvarez didn”t win the game for Kelseyville, but he won the moment.
Batting for only the fifth time in his life, Alvarez launched a two-run home run over the 291-foot sign in left-center field to cap the Knights” 13-1 North Central League I victory over the Willits Wolverines on Wednesday afternoon in Willits.
“He really didn”t know what to do,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said of Alvarez. “He sprinted all the way to third base before I slowed him down.”
Alvarez had already batted once in the game and singled. He finished 2-for-2 as Kelseyville squared its league record at 6-6.
Alvarez was mobbed at home plate by his teammates, something you might see after a game-winning home run in the majors.
Gideon Turner worked six innings for the victory, striking out five and walking none. He also sparked the offense with a double and a pair of singles in five at-bats. Zack Villalobos went 3-for-4 for the Knights while Alvarez, Jonah Lewis and Devin Dugger added two hits apiece.
In a league game Tuesday at Lower Lake, Kelseyville won 6-4 behind the pitching of Asa Peters and the hitting of Turner (3-for-4, double) and Lewis (2-for-3). Peters went six innings, allowing three hits and one earned run. He struck out three and walked two.
