LAKE COUNTY — Fiddlers from the Konocti Fiddle Club represented Lake County at the California-sponsored fiddle contest on April 5 in Cloverdale.

Rafael Contreras, of Lower Lake, placed first in his class for the third year in a row. Contreras is a member of the Lake County Symphony Association Youth Orchestra and the Konocti Fiddle Club.

Additional fiddle club members who placed in the competition were Maya Leonard, of Cobb, in the Pee Wee Class, and Jillian and Evan Johnsen, of Kelseyville, in the Junior-Junior Class. Lake County Symphony member Sue Condit placed in the waltz division and Andi Skelton won in the Twin Fiddle Class as well as in the waltz division.

The following day, the young fiddlers, along with other members of the fiddle club performed at the Ely Stage Stop and Country Museum, representing District 10 of the California State Old Time Fiddlers Association, which encompasses Lake, Sonoma and Mendocino counties.

Their performance helped raise funds for music scholarships, which will go to students in the district who want to learn to play the fiddle.
