VACAVILLE — A 64-year-old man convicted of the 1977 murder of an 88-year-old man in Lucerne was denied parole Wednesday.
Jeffery Scott Sargent, who was convicted to seven-years-to-life for the murder of Gedney Robinson, had his 13th hearing at the Department of Corrections California Medical Facility in Vacaville, Lake County Chief Deputy District Attorney Richard Hinchcliff stated in a press release.
During the hearing, Hinchcliff asked the Board?of?Prison?Hearings (BPH)?to?deny Sargent”s parole?on the grounds that?he still?presents an unreasonable risk?of danger?to?the public if released. He also stated that Sargent failed?to show any remorse or accept responsibility for his actions.
The BPH?determined that Sargent still presents a risk of danger to the public if released and denied parole.
Sargent was sentenced in 1978 by?Superior Court?Judge John Golden and?was originally prosecuted by former District Attorney Robert L. Crone Jr.
His minimum eligible parole date was Oct. 28, 1984.
During the three-hour?hearing on Wednesday Sargent reportedly said he had?gone to?the Robinson”s home, whom he?had never met,?and asked to?use the phone, Hinchcliff stated. Sargent and Robinson got into an argument?inside?the home and Robinson began to choke Sargent. Sargent then the stabbed Robinson to defend himself, Sargent said.
At the time Sargent was 28 years old and Robinson was 88.
Robinson”s niece, his only living relative, also attended?the hearing?to ask the?parole commissioners to deny?parole, Hinchcliff stated.
According to investigation reports by the Lake County Sheriff”s Office, Hinchcliff stated, on Sept. 22, 1977, the Fresno Police Department reported that?a 1974 Ford belonging to Robinson was going to be used in a robbery.
When deputies responded to Robinson”s cabin in Lucerne, they found the front door broken and Mr. Robinson dead inside. He had been stabbed seven times, five times in the heart and?two times?in the?back.?
According to the reports, Hinchcliff stated, Sargent took?a ring?off Robinson”s finger, $40 and ?his?vehicle.
Robinson had?just?returned home the?same?day?from a rock?collecting trip to Nevada, Hinchcliff stated. When Sargent was arrested, he denied any?involvement.
Investigators determined Sargent was?a career?criminal who had just been paroled from prison and had?gone to Lake County two?days?before the murder to see?his wife, who was living near Robinson, Hinchcliff stated. Sargent had been reportedly using heroin and PCP at the time of the murder, according to Hinchcliff.
Some of the stolen property was found in?Sargent”s?possession, Hinchcliff stated. Investigators also determined?Sargent lied?to?them?about?his?involvement in the murder. Following a mistrial, Sargent pleaded guilty?to first degree murder in exchange for one circumstance allegation being dropped.?
His next parole hearing will be held in three years.
