KELSEYVILLE — The Black Forest, located on the flank of Mount Konocti, provides an iconic view of Lake County.
In 1999, plans to log the property were brought to the community”s attention and the Lake County Land Trust (LCLT) was asked to assist in its preservation, according to the LCLT”s website.
The vista, popular with photographers and painters, is frequently featured on the covers of marketing brochures, visitor guides and promotional calendars, according to LCLT member Roberta Lyons.
Additionally, the view from Black Forest is featured in the painting that sits behind the board of supervisors in the chambers at the courthouse.
LCLT, with the help of contributors, was able to save 255 acres of old growth Douglas fir forest on the north-facing slopes of Mount Konocti by purchasing the property and carrying a loan.
LCLT then worked with the Bureau of Land Management, which purchased the land from the trust in 2003.
