KELSEYVILLE — Kelseyville High School sophomore Madison Boyd has been selected to attend the EDGE Youth Leadership seminar from Friday to Sunday at the University of California Berkeley.

Each year high schools are asked to nominate one exceptional student who has demonstrated strong leadership abilities or potential.

Throughout the past 11 years, EDGE has trained thousands of young leaders in the region, according to Kathryn Liu, associate executive director of EDGE. This year, 160 high school sophomores are expected to attend.

The seminar gives young leaders a chance to meet with respected leaders in business, nonprofits and government, pepper them with questions and discuss important issues ranging from the environment to the future of education.

The conference will also feature speakers to encourage students to find ways to make a positive impact on their community through volunteerism. EDGE works to cultivate students” communication, team building and goal-setting skills with a variety of leadership exercises, Liu stated.

The conference is non-partisan and non-sectarian.

EDGE, a nonprofit, is also seeking donors to sponsor students for the seminar. The students all attend free-of-charge, which is made possible by funding from community organizations such as the General Federation of Women”s Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, the Saratoga Rotary Foundation and donations from individuals. The organization relies completely on volunteers.
