LAKEPORT — Clear Lake Scullers (CLS) coach, Mike Sullivan, will teach the basics of sweep rowing for adults and paddling, rowing and water safety for middle school and high school students the weekends of June 27 through 29 and July 11 to 13.

Participants will meet at the boat yard in Lakeport near Main and sixth streets down by the water.

Sullivan rowed at University of California, Irvine (UCI) from 1970 to ?74, and at Undine and Penn AC after, achieving fourth in the nation in single sculls and was a medalist in Canadian and United States championship regattas, according to Annelle Durham.

Sullivan was freshman coach at UCI for three years, and head coach for four years, winning two West Coast championships and numerous national titles, Durham stated. Sullivan has continued to coach elite-level athletes in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has filled in as temporary coach several times at Stanford University for both the men”s and women”s program.

“He started Clear Lake Scullers in Lakeport in 2002 and has introduced many Lake County residents to the joys of rowing,” Durham stated.

Sweep rowing for adults will be taught on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 to 10 a.m.

On Fridays there is a choice of two sessions, 7 to 9 a.m. or 5 to 7p.m.

“If you enjoy being a part of a team and the camaraderie of being in a boat with eight people, then sweep rowing is for you,” Durham stated. “Rowing is a total body workout providing both aerobic and strength conditioning, it improves and maintains flexibility, burns calories, is impact free, and best of all, takes place on our beautiful lake.”

Club membership, which is $100 for the summer, includes the sweep rowing classes, the use of the CLS indoor rowing machines and all sculls, sweep boats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boats at the boat yard.

The middle school and high school program will be held at 10 a.m. everyday, June 27 to 29 and July 11 to 13. It will focus on using paddle boards, kayaks and canoes. The cost is $25 per weekend with some scholarship money available.
