LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Animal Care and Control (LCACC) is accepting stray cats and welcomes eligible residents to participate in its Community Cat Program.
The free-of-charge Community Cat Program allows residents to bring in neighborhood stray cats to be altered, vaccinated, ear notched and then returned to the neighborhoods they came from.
Residents who do not wish for the cat to be returned to their neighborhood can drop the cat off for a fee of $15.
Last year the county took in 1,500 stray cats at a cost of almost $84,000 to taxpayers, according to William Davidson, the director of LCACC. The $15 fee will help offset the cost and allow the LCACC to more properly care for the cats it takes in.
It is more humane and cost effective to spay and neuter the cats than it is to continue to collect and destroy them, Davidson stated.
According to Davidson, people who do not want stray cats in or around their homes should not leave food around their property, should get a motion detector sprinkler or strategically place anti-repellant products such as fresh orange or lemon peels, lavender and herb rue.
LCACC is located at 4949 Helbush Drive in Lakeport.
