LAKE COUNTY >> The Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Garden Club (CLT&TGC) presented scholarships to Middletown High School (MHS) graduate Lindee Jones and Clear Lake High School (CLHS) graduate Asia Jones during the club”s annual installation dinner.
Both graduates received $1,000 from the club. It was Lindee”s third time receiving a scholarship from the club.
“The Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Garden Club is proud and honored to award scholarships to two exemplary young local students,” incoming President Marva Brandt said.
Lindee, who graduated from MHS in 2012, has attended Shasta Community College the past two years where she completed her associates degree in environmental horticulture. She will be transferring to California State University (CSU), Chico next year to obtain a bachelor”s degree in plant science with an emphasis in crop management and to obtain a pest control advisor certificate. Lindee interned last summer at the Lake County Farm Bureau. She is also interning for Ag Unlimited in Kelseyville this summer.
Lindee said she is enthusiastic about the possibility of returning to work for Ag Unlimited after she graduates from CSU, Chico in order to serve the agricultural community here in Lake County.
“I plan on giving accurate recommendations to the farmers to keep their costs low for a larger return on investment,” she said. “By aiding other agriculturalists, it will allow me to help the consumers get their products at a safe and affordable price.”
Asia graduated as valedictorian from CLHS in June with a GPA of 4.17 and says her goal is to become a research biologist in the field of ecology to “try and heal our world.” After obtaining a bachelor”s degree and completing post graduate studies at the University of California, Davis, Asia”s goal is “to inform the public of the consequences of actions like cutting down rainforests, not just on the local environment, but on the entire plant” as well as to “go into the world and make a positive difference,” she said.
While attending CLHS, in addition to being a member of the swim team and band, Asia participated in 4-H, student council and the California Scholarship Federation, as well as putting in more than 500 hours of volunteer work for events such as Grillin” on the Green, the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfasts, the Halloween Carnival, the People Services Chicken-Q and the Veteran”s Day ceremony. She attained her 4-H All Star, which is the highest 4-H award given at a county level. She also participated in academic decathlon for four years where she was the highest scoring team member the past two years, advancing the team this year to the state level, according to Debra Watson.
The CLT&TGC members have traditionally raised funds for its yearly $1,000 scholarship awards by making holiday wreaths out of fresh foliage. Brandt said that this year the club is excited to take on a new project in lieu of wreath-making to raise the funds.
“We are planning a fantastic home/garden tour in May of 2016, which will feature some of the most beautiful and interesting gardens around the lake,” Brandt said.
The club meets at noon at the Scott”s Valley Women”s Clubhouse on the third Tuesday of every month, except in July and August, for lunch and a garden-based program. The club welcomes new members.
