MIDDLETOWN >> On June 28, a group of volunteers gathered on Rabbit Hill in Middletown in order to facilitate a cleanup and restoration project.

The project was organized by the Lake County Land Trust with the goal of cleaning up litter, pruning brush that was obstructing signs and use of the picnic bench and to start remodeling the old restroom building into an information kiosk.

Huck and Skee Hamann, the original owners of the property, created the nature preserve with the property in memory of their daughter. The land trust aims to use the preserve for outdoor education for children, according to Lyons.

Rabbit Hill is a serpentine outcropping with plants and animals that thrive in this specific environment, Lyons stated.

The Lake County Land Trust owns and operates Rabbit Hill. People interested in volunteering to assist in its renovation and preservation should contact land trust board member Val Nixon at 277-7713.
