UPPER LAKE >> The whimsical and creative sculptural work of composer-pianist-performer Spencer Brewer and psychotherapist and artist Esther Siegel is featured during the month of August at the Upper Lake Mercantile.
A reception featuring the husband and wife artists will be held at the Main Street store on Aug. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m.
Born in Dallas, Texas and now living in Redwood Valley, Brewer began playing the piano at age 7 and continues to perform today, according to Lynne Butcher. He has composed music, accompanied modern dance troupes, recorded for himself and others and is well known in the area for events such as The Professional Pianist Series, Concerts in the Park and the Acoustic Caf?. Brewer also has donated his expertise and energy to many performing and educational organizations in Mendocino.
About 15 years ago Brewer turned his artistic talents to the creation of solid objects using his collection of musical items, Butcher stated. He has created a collection of sculptures from materials such as microphones, pieces from old pianos, records and other unrelated items. A psychotherapist and horseback-riding instructor, Siegel”s work uses recycled, mostly small items to make thoughtful, provoking, lightly humorous pieces such as “Horse People,” “Twisted Toasters” and greeting cards, Butcher stated. Her work often involves universal themes from childhood.
Located by the town clock in the old bank building, the Upper Lake Mercantile offers artistic pieces plus items for the home and garden, with an emphasis on locally-made and sourced goods, Butcher stated.
A sister business to the Tallman Hotel and Blue Wing Saloon, Upper Lake Mercantile is open daily from 10 a.m to 6 p.m.
Upper Lake Mercantile will regularly feature mostly local artists and designers. Details about retail items and future promotions at the store can be obtained from manager Susan Saunders at 275-8018 or by emailing info@upperlakemercantile.com.
