KELSEYVILLE >> Basic volunteer mediation training classes will be offered throughout the month of October for people interested in becoming a volunteer mediator.
Classes will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 10 and 17 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 11, 18 and 25 at the United Methodist Church.
In order to obtain certification of completion, attendees must attend all sessions of the course. Attorneys and paralegals can obtain 28 hours of continuing legal education units
Volunteer mediators aid parties in conflict through facilitating communication, defining issues of disputes and exploring the interests, needs and desires of each party. Lake County Mediations works will small claims court and evictions court, as well as in other areas of the community.
Participants of the classes will work in teams and be taught how to improve listening skills, deal with strong emotions and biases, identify conflict styles, work with diverse populations, develop interest-based problem solving methods, find common ground in disputes and build agreement writing skills.
The cost for the course is $250. However, people with proof of limited income can pay a reduced fee of $125, provided they make arrangements to donate 25 hours of volunteer service with Lake County Mediations. The service can include shadowing other mediators or continuing with their training.
Reduced price available for individuals with proof of limited income and who make an agreement to provide 25 hours of service with Lake County Mediations, which can be obtained by shadowing other mediators or continuing in training. For service in lawful small claims court, unlawful detainer court commercial evictions and community mediations.
The class is sponsored by the Lake County Mediation, Lake County Bar Association and Lake County Superior Court.
Registration is required and payment is due by Oct. 2.
