MIDDLETOWN >> Cobb Mountain Artists will feature Julie Kreis on Sept. 10.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Middletown Senior Center.
Kreis has been drawing since she was a small child, but has developed her current art forms later in her life.
She has traveled the globe extensively and during her trips she became interested in making jewelry and learning calligraphy. While traveling in Mexico, Kreis purchased jade and while in Myanmar (formally Burma), she bought some amber. She used those materials to fashion earrings and other jewelry.
She also taught kindergarten in Japan, and while there studied under two sensei (teachers) to learn the ancient art of calligraphy.
Using the skills that she learned and developed, Kreis now produces a variety of earrings and bracelets. Her calligraphy centers around the production of scrolls using the Japanese/Chinese language characters, which denote various creatures and or meanings. She also embellishes them with drawing to produce a blend of Asian and Western art on cards.
