MIDDLETOWN >> It”s a sure bet the Middletown High School varsity volleyball team hasn”t found its stride yet. A team that was in the thick of the North Central League I title race a year ago fell 25-12, 25-17, 25-19 to a powerful Healdsburg squad on Thursday evening in non-league action at Middletown.

Despite being swept by the Greyhounds, Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said she wasn”t in the least bit disappointed with her team”s effort against a better club.

“Healdsburg has girls so tall they”re hitting over my big girls,” Breiner said. “They have two great outside hitters. I”m not kidding, one hit right over the top of Renee (Edwards). She (Edwards) looked at me like, ”What am I supposed to do”? There was nothing we could do.”

Edwards, Middletown”s All-League middle hitter, still posted solid numbers with nine kills and five blocks.

“We played well, still had more mistakes than I would have liked but not as many errors as in our last match (Tuesday against St. Vincent),” Breiner said. “It was a real fun match.”

Jordan Ketchum had 18 digs for the Mustangs and Ginacia Dustako had four kills, one block and nine digs.

Middletown”s junior varsity squad didn”t fare any better, falling 25-22, 25-13.

Middletown heads north to the Arcata Tournament on Saturday.
