Clear Lake 1
At Lakeport, Luis Martinez scored just a minute into the game to give Clear Lake its first lead of the season, but the Cardinals fell to the Cloverdale Eagles in the league opener for both teams.
Clear Lake (0-1, 0-3) lost its starting keeper, Frankie Sturr, to a possible broken toe, according to Clear Lake co-coach Tony Paskaly.
“He came out to challenge the ball on a breakaway and collided with a Cloverdale player,” Paskaly said.
Bailey Elkington filled in the rest of the way.
“He did a good job but it”s really not his position,” Paskaly said.
Cloverdale led 4-1 after one half.
Luis Muniz, the Cardinals” stopper, turned in a solid effort on defense, according to Paskaly.
“He did an absolutely great job,” Paskaly said.
“The guys fought hard and held them to one goal in the second half,” Paskaly added.
Willits 3, Middletown 0
At Middletown, while missing out on an early scoring opportunity didn”t beat the Middletown Mustangs against the Willits Wolverines, a quick goal might have been a boost for his squad, according to Middletown coach Luis Chairez.
“It might have helped change some things,” Chairez said.
The league opener for both teams marked Middletown”s third game of the season and its third shutout loss.
“Overall we had a good game and some solid opportunities,” Chairez said. “We just didn”t take advantage of them.”
