FORESTVILLE >> A little of this, a little of that, a lot of Wyatt Hall.
Middletown”s lineman-turned-running-back rushed for a career-best 125 yards and a touchdown as the Middletown Mustangs built a 20-0 lead en route to a 26-7 victory over the El Molino Lions on Friday night in Forestville.
Anthonie Guzman and Joey Burns added rushing touchdowns as Middletown improved to 2-1 season, each of its wins coming against Sonoma County League teams. The Mustangs” first points of the game came on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Connor Armstrong to Albert Ruske in the first quarter.
Middletown finished with 322 yards rushing and 75 passing.
The Mustangs were efficient on defense as well. They held an explosive El Molino passing attack to 148 yards and no touchdowns. The Lions” lone score was Eddie Taylor”s 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter, that set up by one of two Middletown turnovers in the game.
After closing to 20-7, El Molino recovered an onside kick but Middletown”s defense stopped the Lions. On the Mustangs” next possession, they scored on Burns” 3-yard run to put the game away.
Burns, a converted lineman like Hall, finished with 89 yards on 15 carries.
“Joey Burns had a good game,” Middletown coach Bill Foltmer said. “If I had to single out any one guy, it would have to be him.”
Burns also recovered a fumble, one of five turnovers forced by the Middletown defense. The Mustangs added two quarterback sacks, both by Hall.
Guzman”s fingerprints were all over the win as well. In addition to 85 yards rushing and a TD, he caught four passes for 36 yards and had an interception.
“I thought Guzman had a good game and Hall was solid,” Foltmer said. “(Cody) Chorjel played well, too.”
While the Mustangs made a handful of mistakes, Foltmer said a road win against the caliber of an El Molino is not something to be taken lightly.
“El Molino is not a bad team,” Foltmer said. “Bottom line is we beat two Sonoma County League teams on the road (the Mustangs won 12-0 at Healdsburg last week) and I”ll take that.”
Middletown led 7-0 after one quarter, 14-0 at the half and 20-0 through three quarters.
The Mustangs celebrate their homecoming next Friday as they open defense of their 2013 North Central League I championship against Willits.
