Lakeport >> September marks the 30th anniversary of California Library Literacy Services.

At its Sept. 2 meeting, the Lake County Board of Supervisors, “recognized that our county”s greatest resource is its people and it is in our best interest to help increase the literacy levels of all our citizen,” Sue Wilson, Lake County Literacy Coalition volunteer, stated.

Lake County librarian, Christopher Veach, added, “It”s so wonderful to be able to accept this proclamation and honor the hard work of volunteer tutors who take their time to give the gift of reading to adult learners and their families.”

Over the years, the Lake County Library”s Adult Literacy Program has trained more than 1,100 volunteer tutors, who in turn helped more than 2,000 learners, Wilson stated. In addition, if an adult learner has young children, the whole family is eligible for services under the Families for Literacy Program.

The work of the Adult Literacy Program is supported in part by the Lake County Literacy Coalition. The coalition will sponsor the 25th annual Vineyard Run For Literacy Oct. 12 at Steele Winery.

“All proceeds go to purchase books and supplies and to train tutors,” coalition member Deb Ehrhardt said. “It”s a fun event that helps a very worthy cause.”
