LOWER LAKE >> Quarterback Hokulani Wickard passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Lower Lake Trojans beat the Fort Bragg Timberwolves 16-13 in the North Central League I opener for both of these junior varsity football teams on Friday night at Gordon Sadler Field.

Wickard connected with Marlon Jones on a 40-yard scoring strike in the first quarter as the Trojans grabbed an 8-0 lead. Wickard passed to Gabe Freeman for the conversion.

Fort Bragg closed to 8-6 in the second quarter. That”s where the score remained until the third quarter when Wickard ran it in from four yards out, Jordan Harris tacking on the two-point conversion run to make it 16-6.

The Timberwolves closed to 16-13 on a long touchdown pass with two minutes remaining. Lower Lake ran out the remainder of the clock.

Wickard went 9-for-15 for 124 yards and a touchdown. He was complimented by a Lower Lake running attack that gained 165 yards on 33 carries.

“The highlight of the game for me was how well the defense played,” Lower Lake coach Ed Fuchs said. “To hold them to six points until near the end of the game, that”s a pretty good job.”

Lower Lake, now 3-1 overall, returns to action Friday night in St. Helena. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. The varsity game follows.
