MIDDLETOWN >> It wasn”t the World Cup championship game, but it might have felt like it for the Middletown Mustangs, 4-1 winners over the Clear Lake Cardinals in boys” soccer action on Thursday evening at Middletown High School.

Both teams entered play 0-5 in the North Central League I standings and 0-7 overall.

“We finally showed what we”re capable of,” Middletown coach Luis Chairez said after watching the Mustangs get goals from four different players — Victor Lopez, Marco Rincon, Jorge Morales and Evan Dodd.

Christian Cerda scored an unassisted goal in the second half for Clear Lake to cut Middletown”s lead to 3-1. Lopez scored 15 minutes into the game for Middletown, the only goal of the first half.

Clear Lake co-coach Tony Paskaly praised the play of his keeper, sophomore Gio Sanchez.

“He did a great job,” Paskaly said.

“They have a great group of guys and they played hard,” Chairez said of the Cardinals.
