I want to thank Walter Camp for creating the game of American Football and for all it has done for our country, and most of our little county. Each fall football brings together our communities and gives our families and children something to be excited about. Football teaches all of us so many life lessons and gives us a time out to forget about our life stresses and enjoy something special.

Nothing is better than to see the proud smiles of parents and their children sharing the accomplishments that occur from the game of football. It is amazing all the hours of hard work put in, not only from the entire staff of teams, but the community who helps out to make these special events memorable. It is amazing that 100 yards of lawn and a leather ball can bring so much joy to our communities. It only makes me wonder, if we bring that same togetherness and excitement to the world”s problems what could be accomplished?

Sport has this power. I have read that back in World War I, soldiers from England and Germany put down their weapons on Christmas day, exchanged gifts and took part in a game of soccer (the original football) for the day. The game was won 3-2 by Germany. This is another example of how powerful the game really can be.

Even though we all might not root for the same teams, it gives us a moment to share the same entertainment and goals. It gives us a big opportunity to come together to support our youth and believe in their activities. It gives us a chance to come out of our comfort zone and explore new towns, new people, and enjoy an evening out with our families. It gives us the opportunity to network with people in our community and share stories and laughs.

Although I thanked Walter Camp for creating this great game, I also want to thank all the coaches, parents, schools, and towns throughout Lake County who make the game of football special for our youth. It truly is making a positive impact on these young people”s lives—creating a constructive place and giving our youth confidence and goals they can use for the future. So thank you.
