LAKE COUNTY >> Anthonie Guzman gave Fort Bragg the runaround on Friday night at Timberwolf Stadium, spoiling the Timberwolves” homecoming celebration in the process.
While the senior is Lake County”s leading wide receiver, he”s also a threat to run the ball in Middletown”s offense and he often does. On Friday, he logged a career-best 185 yards on nine carries and scored on runs of 60 and 5 yards as the Mustangs rallied from a 13-0 deficit to beat Fort Bragg 28-19.
And he kept right on running even when he wasn”t carrying the football. Guzman also had four catches for 43 yards while playing on offense and his 30-yard interception return in the second quarter put Middletown ahead to stay at 14-13 as Tyler Holt kicked the extra point. It was Guzman”s fourth interception of the season and his second pick six.
In other Week 5 action around Lake County, Kelseyville squared its North Central League I record sans head coach with a 21-14 win at Cloverdale, Clear Lake surrendered 32 unanswered points in a 32-8 loss at Willits, Lower Lake never got untracked against St. Helena and fell 48-14 in St. Helena, and the Upper Lake Cougars dropped to 0-5 on the season with a 42-0 home loss to St. Helena.

McGuire comments — Kelseyville varsity head coach Mike McGuire wasn”t on the sidelines with the Knights on Friday night when they won at Cloverdale. According to athletic director Scott Conrad, “We had some kids make a mistake ? there was some discipline involved. Coach McGuire felt like he had to remove himself from the situation.” Said McGuire, “We had a private team infraction this past week and after evaluating our situation I met with our administration and let them know I thought as the head football coach that it would be appropriate to stand down this week. I appreciate the fact that my administration trusted my decision on this and allowed me to make that decision. I have a lot of confidence in my team and coaches and thought it was important to send the message to the team that we need to make better decisions at times and I”m glad to see the team pulled together and obviously everyone involved did a great job. I think our team not only got a win tonight, but we grew into a tighter unit.” Added McGuire in a follow-up message to the Record-Bee, “Lou Poloni, Rob Ishihara, Mike Lyndall and Jim Ducoty did a fantastic job. I”m really proud of them.” Poloni served as the interim head coach against Cloverdale, Mike Lyndall took over for McGuire as offensive coordinator, Ishihara ran the defense as usual and Ducoty coached the special teams.
Just a note to all of you JV parents — If we receive game information from your son”s coach, it runs in the Record-Bee. It”s just that easy.
Spreading the wealth — Rosie Emerson, daughter of first-year Middletown girls” soccer coach Amy Emerson, scored two goals on Thursday in the Mustangs” 5-2 win over Clear Lake. She scored one for each team. Emerson accidentally headed in a Clear Lake corner kick to give the Cardinals one of their goals in the first half. Emerson”s other goal — for Middletown — put the Mustangs ahead to stay 3-2 in the second half.

It”s flying by — The high school regular season ends one month from today for Lake County teams. Wondering if it will still be 95 degrees outside by then.
A good eye for talent — “The Raiders looked the best they have all season today,” said Raiders fan and Lower Lake coach Tim Biasotti on a Facebook posting Sunday. It was Oakland”s bye week.
Jacksonville joke backfires — The mascot for the Jacksonville Jaguars, the NFL”s East Coast version of the Oakland Raiders, held up a sign in the fourth quarter stating, “Towels Carry Ebola.” The mascot was making fun of the towel Pittsburgh Steelers fans wave at games. The job status of said mascot said to be in critical condition at last check.
