TOMALES >> A tie isn”t a win, but for the Upper Lake Cougars, 0-11 entering play on Wednesday afternoon in Tomales, a tie can be a very sweet thing indeed.

Behind two goals and an assist from Julia Mooney, the Upper Lake girls” soccer team earned a 4-4 draw with the Tomales Braves in North Central League II action on Wednesday in Tomales where the weather changed with each half.

“It was windy and hot in the first half, then it turned cold in the second half,” Upper Lake coach Mandy Robbins said.

Upper Lake (0-11-1) trailed 3-1 after one half but thundered back in the final 40 minutes. Goals by Sheyla Ayala and two from Mooney, the final one with 13 minutes remaining, got the Cougars back even at 4.

“I was so excited, so proud of my girls,” Robbins said of the second-half comeback. “We had good passing and looked like a team.”

With three players missing out with injuries, Upper Lake had only one reserve to call on.

The Cougars had the best chance to break the tie in the game”s final minutes but Amber Drake just missed on a potential game-winning shot.

Bianca Cruz scored in the first half for the Cougars, who had a season-high 21 shots on goal.

The team is right back in action today at home against Calistoga at 4:30 p.m.
