LAKEPORT >> The Soper Reese Community Theatre will open its doors tonight for the first performance of Lake County Theatre Company”s LCTC production of “Spamalot.” The cast and crew of LCTC”s newest play have been working since June to bring audiences the show, according to Laura Barnes, producer.

Monty Python, which began with a small British comedy troupe in the late ”60s, has held a cult following for more than 40 years. Some of The Pythons” most memorable cult classics include “And Now for Something Completely Different,” “Monty Python”s Life of Brian” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” which is the inspiration behind the live stage musical, Spamalot.

“Monty Python fans have an abundance of ridiculous humor to look forward to in this play, from the absurd castle-top conversations about migratory patterns of swallows, to the dismembering of the Black Knight (don”t worry, it”s just a flesh wound) and everything in between,” Barnes stated. “If you”re fortunate, your general direction may even be farted in.”

But Barnes says audience members don”t need to be Monty Python enthusiasts to enjoy the production.

“I had seen a couple Monty Python films,” she said, “and honestly, I never really understood the appeal. It wasn”t my style of humor, I suppose. But watching rehearsals and seeing the comedy performed live (especially by people I know) is a totally different experience. Sometimes I just can”t stop laughing. I never thought I could enjoy a Monty Python production so much, and I appreciate the Pythonesque humor in a completely new way now. The show also has great music and lyrics, and we are fortunate enough to have a live band to accompany the actors.”

Show dates for Spamalot are tonight Friday Saturday, Oct. 16, and 18 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 18, and 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Soper Reese Community Theatre box office, or online at www.soperreesetheater.com.

The theater is located at 275 S. Main St. in Lakeport.
