UPPER LAKE >> A woman on a bicycle was struck by an alleged drunk driver operating a water tanker truck on Wednesday morning. She sustained major injuries as a result.

Leah Emma Solon was riding northbound on Elk Mountain Road just before 7:30 a.m. When George Carl Allen, also northbound, attempted to pass her and hit Solon”s bicycle, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Michael Phillips.

Solon, 50, reportedly fell to the road”s shoulder. According to authorities, she was not wearing a helmet. She was transported via ambulance to Sutter Lakeside Hospital.

Allen, 60, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.

CHP reminds drivers to share the road with bicyclists and reminds bicyclists to wear their helmets, Phillips stated.
