MIDDLETOWN >> Middletown High School varsity volleyball coach Jennifer Breiner never knows which of her two teams will show up on any given night. Will it be the team that gave the undefeated St. Helena Saints all they could want only a few days ago or the team that showed up on Tuesday against Kelseyville?
“This team is not the one that played St. Helena last Thursday,” Breiner said after the Mustangs were flattened by the Knights, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, on Tuesday in Middletown.
Despite 13 kills and three blocks from middle hitter Renee Edwards, the Mustangs watched their North Central League I record slip to 5-6 while Kelseyville improved to 9-2.
“They (Knights) played well, we did not,” Breiner said.
Kelseyville, sitting second in the league standings behind St. Helena (11-0), received solid play from its entire starting lineup. Kayla Zarate led the team with 11 kills, Heidy Cano added seven and Carli Mendonca had four. Other leaders were Riley Goff with 18 assists and Mary McCallister with five aces.
The Knights also received solid play in the back row from libero Lauren Rudnick.
“She did a great job in the back row,” Kelseyville coach Donelle McCallister said.
The Knights committed only 10 hitting errors, a big improvement, according to McCallister.
“All of our hitters had some pretty good stats,” she said.
Jess DeSilva had three kills and a block for Middletown.
