LAKEPORT >> The Lake County Board of Supervisors held two nuisance abatement hearings Tuesday.

The property owners in question were not present at either hearing.

The first hearing was in regard to a mobile home on Rose Street in Lower Lake that had been destroyed by fire.

According to Lake County Community Development and Code Enforcement Director Richard Coel, the original abatement notice was posted on the property on May 16.

After no action was taken by the property owner, the project was contracted out for a little less than $3,000.

Work entailed the complete demolition of the property.

During the second hearing, an abandoned home on Lakeview Drive in Nice was discussed.

After posting an abatement notice on March 14, the homeowner obtained a boarded up building permit. However, the homeowner contacted the code enforcement department on Aug. 1 to authorize proceeding with the abatement.

The demolition of the home was contracted out and completed on Sept. 26, Coel said. The contract totaled a little more than $6,000.

In September, Coel outlined for the county supervisors plans to search for code violations in particular communities throughout the county, then move around the lake.

“We expect to see voluntary compliance increase as we move forward,” Coel said.

Currently, approximately 30 percent of abatements are complied voluntarily.

Additionally, Coel believes the overall expense related to such projects can be reduced by focusing on individual communities.

“A lot of our costs are for mobilization and transport to the landfill,” Coel said.

If each area is addressed on its own, Coel said local contractors can be hired to potentially lessen cost to the county.
