WILLITS >> The Kelseyville Knights couldn”t hold a 13-8 lead in the final minutes as the Willits Wolverines prevailed 14-13 in North Central League I varsity football action on Friday night at Maize Field.
Willits scored on a 55-yard deep post pass with two minutes remaining push in front 14-13, that after Kelseyville drove to the Wolverines” 20-yard line before losing possession on downs.
With time running out following Willits” go-ahead score, the Knights made it as far as midfield before the game ended.
“Our defense played outstanding,” Kelseyville coach Mike McGuire said. “Other than that one play, we didn”t give up much.”
Willits” only other touchdown came on a long interception return right before halftime. The Wolverines added the two-point conversion to go up 8-7. Edgar Ramirez, who made his first start of the season for the Knights, scored on a short run earlier in the second quarter as the Knights (2-5, 5-5) took a 7-0 lead. Ramirez finished with 157 yards on 23 carries.
Kelseyville pushed ahead 13-8 in the third quarter on quarterback Noah Lyndall”s 8-yard run.
The Knights finished with almost 400 yards of total offense.
“And somehow we found a way not to win the game,” McGuire said.
Willits benefited from three Kelseyville turnovers to snap a three-game losing streak and finish tied with the Knights for sixth place in the final league standings. Both teams were heavily penalized — the Knights for 150 yards and the Wolverines for 100 yards, according to McGuire.
