In his white suit, pipe in hand, Mark Twain shuffled across the Soper Reese stage toward his coveted flask of whiskey. The crowd on Wednesday evening loved it.
With wit and wisdom, McAvoy Layne, aka Mark Twain, took a crowd of about 100 from his boyhood home in Hannibal, Missouri to his early life on the Mississippi River boats. To everyone”s amusement they followed him and his adventures across the continent on the Overland Stage to Lake Tahoe.
Mark Twain had so much more of his life to be told but there just was not time. Maybe the Lake County Arts Council can persuade McAvoy Layne to come back for an encore performance.
The evening was sponsored by the Lake County Arts Council. Those in attendance enjoyed wine and a wide variety of finger food. The event was billed as the annual meeting. The audience was assured that the business would take less then 15 minutes and it was devoted only to introducing the Lake County Arts Council Board of Directors and volunteers.
With the success of the Evening With Mark Twain, the audience was informed of some of the Lake County Arts Council”s coming events including the Art Auction at the Soper Reese Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 16 beginning at 2 p.m. Music Fest, with auditions on Dec. 18 will delight with the performance on Jan. 24. Other coming events include Art in the Park, Spring Bazaar, the Spring Dance Festival, the Academic Decathlon, Poetry Out Loud and the always popular First Friday Fling.
The First Friday Fling is held the first Friday of each month at the Main Street Art Gallery at 325 No. Main St. in Lakeport. It is a chance for the public to meet some of Lake County”s most talented artists while enjoying wine and food.
