I have been volunteering for Animal Control for eight years and I would like to address the topic of euthanizing dogs and cats in Lake County. We should be blaming irresponsible owners and people who consciously allow there animals to breed in a county that has a spay and neuter law.
It is a horrible decision to make when deciding to put an animal to sleep, but the public does not give these agencies a choice. Someone has to make a decision because of the over population of animals. We have a horrible problem with people throwing away perfectly good dogs and cats and I know for a fact that Animal Control does there very best to re-home these animal and to get them into appropriate rescues and I”m sure that the SPCA does their best also. There are too many “wonderful animals” being thrown away for one weak excuse or another. I personally have had to deal with a neighbor that lets her cats breed continuously. She takes no responsibility for her animals and has over a dozen cats that are still breeding despite my efforts to stop it.
Despite what people think, the people who work and volunteer and these agencies “love” animals and do their best to save as many as we can.
