UPDATED:

I was thoroughly dismayed, as were many other Lake County residents, to learn after the Nov. 4 election that Measure S had failed to receive enough votes to be enacted. Clear Lake is obviously is in desperate need of some extensive cleanup, including among other things, the removal of the algae and various kinds of weeds. This cleanup will be costly, but until enough voters are willing to approve a small tax increase to fund the process, a different source of funds needs to be found.

I would suggest that those who developed S, and those who strongly supported it, follow the example of other fund raising programs that have been successfully operated in our county and elsewhere. These programs involve recruiting as many retail stores as possible to accept voluntary donations from their customers for the purpose of doing what S was intended to do. Signs would be installed in the retail outlets to inform their customers of this voluntary donation program, and the amount donated would be entered in the receipt of each contributor. Such fund gathering programs have provided support for cancer research, school supplies for needy children, and many others.

Let”s do what we can to clean up our lake and make it as beautiful and attractive as it used to be!
