Lakeport >> With one fundraiser, the Leishman family has secured their home and is almost completely rid of medical expenses accrued after father and Lakeport police officer Jarvis Leishman fell ill.
An estimated 250 people poured into the Lakeport Senior Activity Center Saturday night for a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for Leishman and his family.
“It was such a great community effort … the list just goes on and on of people who called asked, ”What do you need?”” Christina Basor, who helped organize the event, said.
Leishman is a 12-year veteran of the Lakeport Police Department whose work includes being a school resource officer and patrol officer.
Last year, however, Leishman battled with a debilitating illness and had several hospital stays that left him unable to work, and his benefits from the city of Lakeport are now coming to an end because of the time he”s had to take off of work.
To help offset the costs, volunteers, mostly officers” wives, came together for the fundraiser, Basor said.
More than 70 silent actions items and 18 live auction items, including three handguns, were sold. There was also about 30 bakery items, with a cake selling for more than $200, and 30 raffle prizes.
“The fundraiser exceeded my wildest expectations,” Basor said. “The community was incredible generous.”
