When I read the Bible I read some history, a moral code and some ”just-so” stories. What are ”just-so” stories? They explain natural phenomena for a civilization which doesn”t have a scientific explanation. Why is there fire? We have the Titan Prometheus. Why is there a rainbow after the rain? We have Noah”s Flood. Why are there so many different languages? We have the Tower of Babel.
I have a friend who is a fundamentalist (a really nice guy) and we occasionally discussed religion. I asked him if I told him of 10 different scientific facts that disproved an earth less than 7,000 years old, would he admit that his belief in this was wrong? He just kept trying to find religious explanations to explain these facts. Most of what he found was not creditable and the rest did not hold up to real science. Yet, he still holds to his belief. Do people believe there were no rainbows before Noah”s Flood? That there was only one language before the Tower of Babel? That when an army loses a battle that God is punishing them for some unknown reason? I don”t know of anyone who still believes that Prometheus gave man fire. And why does it matter that the six days of Creation actually took six days? If this fundamental part of the Bible is wrong then what other parts are wrong?
Christians tell me of the return of Jesus and how evil will be expunged and how all who have found Jesus will be saved. I want to know why this has not already happened. What is the big holdup? It seams to me that everyone born into this world with a ”fallen nature” has done so with the consent of Jesus. Why aren”t Christians asking this question?
