MIDDLETOWN >> Even without one of their top players, the Piedmont Highlanders were able to beat the Middletown Mustangs 56-43 in non-league varsity boys” basketball action on Tuesday night in Middletown.

Piedmont (3-0) lost junior guard Sean Rodriguez during warmups to a sore ankle.

“You never want to see that happen, but I thought we had a better chance to win,” Middletown”s Jon Hoogendoorn said.

Hoogendoorn, the Mustangs” junior varsity coach, pulled double duty on Tuesday as he coached both JVs and varsity with head coach G.J. Rockwell out of town on business. He”ll do the same thing again on Friday when Middletown hosts Emery.

Minus Rodriguez, the Mustangs still had their hands full against the Highlanders.

“They all can handle the ball, they all can run,” Hoogendoorn said. “I was impressed with the way they played.”

Middletown (2-2) trailed 31-21 at halftime and played most of the second half within seven to 10 points of Piedmont.

“I can”t take anything away from our kids,” Hoogendoorn said. “They busted their butts out there tonight.”

Cody Chorjel and Anthonie Guzman handled the scoring load for the Mustangs with 16 and 15 points, respectively. No other Middletown player had more than three.

Earlier in the JV game, Piedmont beat Middletown 54-21.

“They pressed us the whole game,” Hoogendoorn said of his young squad. “I”m comfortable with where we are as a group.”

Beckett Hoage”s six points led the Mustangs (2-2) and Ricardo Chaires had five.
