Jonathan Samuel Nance was awarded the Rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony on Nov. 29. This is the highest rank the Boy Scouts Of America can award a young man in the scouting program.

Nance is a member of Middletown Troop 43 and has been in scouting since he was 8 years old.

At 16 years old, Nance has already accomplished much. He is a straight A student at Middletown High School and an active participant on the High School Cross Country and Tennis teams. He is regularly recognized by his teachers as a student who both excels at his work and is enjoyable to have in the class. Nance is also an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

For his Eagle Service Project, Nance fundraised, planned and supervised construction of fencing for the new Middletown Museum across from the Middletown park, senior center and library. He had a lot of help from local businesses for materials and local youth groups for labor. The new fencing really compliments the hard work that has been put into both the new museum and park in Middletown.

The new Eagle Scout is an important part of the Nance family where he is the fourth of five children and the third of four brothers. He is also the third Eagle Scout in that same family, both older brothers already achieving the rank of Eagle, Nicholas in 2006 and Jacob in 2012. His grandfather, Dan Nance, was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award by BSA for his service to the Boy Scouts of America over the last 40 years. His father, Chris, is also an Eagle Scout. The last member of the family, Kevin, plans to become an Eagle Scout like his brothers, but still needs a few years as he just turned 11 and became an official Boy Scout a few weeks ago.

Scouting, an organization founded over 100 years ago, endeavors to teach young men to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.
