MIDDLETOWN >> There”s nothing like a bit of home cooking to keep you on your game.

The Middletown Mustangs, riding a 26-point night by Ashlyn Wleton, maintained their lead atop the North Central League I varsity girls” basketball standings with a 57-37 victory over the Willits Wolverines on Tuesday night in Middletown.

Middletown (6-1 league, 13-6 overall) entered play with a one-game lead over four other teams — including Willits (4-3) — in the NCL I standings. By evening”s end, the Mustangs still held that lead over two others — Clear Lake (5-2) and Kelseyville (5-2) — as the league race reached the midway mark.

“She”s in a groove right now and we needed it,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said of Welton”s second straight big game.

Coming off a season-best 31-point effort on Friday against Lower Lake, Welton added another double-double to her season total as she pulled down 11 rebounds to go along with two blocked shots.

Nicole Corsetti”s play also stood out, according to Bazzano. She finished with nine points, five rebounds and five steals.

“She”s a nightmare for other teams on the defensive end,” Bazzano said.

Abby Aden gave the Mustangs a lift in the second half with six points.
