The Featherbed Railroad in Nice, California is featured in a new travel guidebook, “Quirky Sleeps: Some of America”s Most Fun Places to Spend the Night.”

The book is based upon the premise that there are a lot more interesting places to spend the night while traveling than the typical modern motel. Travelers can instead stay overnight in castles, cabooses, lighthouses, tree houses, caves, yurts, former jails, Hobbit homes, silos, tall ships and a host of other eclectic lodgings. Bruce and Susan Armstrong spent over 100 days on the road, putting over 22,000 miles on their car, scouring the country to visit as many of these quirky places as they could find. The result is an informative guidebook that can make the evening”s lodging a highlight of any road trip.

Quirky Sleeps: Some of America”s Most Fun Places to Spend the Night covers 138 lodging places located in 42 states, all of them open to the general public. The book describes each location and the experience of staying there, based largely on the Armstrong”s visit. It provides contact information for making reservations and tips on how to get the most from a stay. The book is organized geographically by state, but also contains a cross directory by type of lodging for travelers who want to concentrate on a particular area of interest, such as lighthouses, cabooses or tree houses, for example.

The Featherbed Railroad is included in the book”s listings for “Cabooses and Other Railroad Cars” for its nine cabooses located in a park-like setting on Clear Lake, with each caboose turned into unique, themed lodging. Guests have access to a gas grill, picnic table, an outdoor seating area, and a pool with sunning chairs on the grounds. Bicycles for two and free DVDs are available at the office. The Featherbed Railroad is one of twenty California locations featured in the book.

Quirky Sleeps is a guidebook to consult when visiting an area, or planning a road trip. Whether looking for a family outing, a romantic weekend or just a change of pace, Quirky Sleeps offers some intriguing possibilities.

The book is available at The Featherbed Railroad.
