The holiday season is here, and for many gamers that means one thing: Steam’s annual winter sale.
Each year, around the holidays, Steam offer deals on thousands of titles offer through digital distribution platform. Some deals are miniscule, while others are drastic and, to many, impossible to resist.
I have a tendency to fall into the latter group. My game library on Steam has more than a 200 games, many of which I will probably not touch for years to come.
I would say I have spent a little more than $200 on Steam over the years.
However, according to www.steamdb.info, my library is worth $2,623.
Most of the games I have bought have been on sale, or parts of bundles from websites such as www.humblebundle.com. Some games have been given to me as gifts from friends.
Will I play all these games to completion? Probably not. In fact, according to the same website, I have only played 33 percent of my games, leaving 147 untouched so far.
But that doesn’t mean I won’t end up buying another four or five games during this sale.
I liken it saving up for a rainy day — at some point I won’t be able to buy new games for some time, so I can stock up now for very little money and ensure my hobby continues well into my old age.
Beyond that, my wife and children will have games to play.
Honestly, at this rate, I’m sure my grandchildren and great grandchildren will be set.
Some may read this and think it is a waste, but I look at it as an investment and as an achievement, much like a bookworm continuously adds to their home library.
For those looking for a good gift for gamers this year, the sale ends Jan. 2. A $10 or $20 gift card can go a long way during a Steam sale. All that is needed is a free Steam account and a computer with the capability of running the games they would purchase. But games can also be catered to the computer, the Steam catalog.
