PETALUMA >> Winning a rough and tumble battle that sent several Middletown players to the bench with injuries, the Casa Grande Gauchos defeated the Mustangs 48-40 in non-league varsity girls’ basketball action on Monday in Petaluma.

Ashlyn Welton’s 16 points led the Mustangs (7-4), who had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Middletown trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half but was as close as one point on four occasions in the fourth quarter.

At Winters, in a game Middletown thoroughly controlled by halftime, the Mustangs beat Winters, improving their season record to 6-2. Von Self went 4-for-4 from 3-point range and finished with 14 points. Cody Chorjel, named the MVP in the Record-Bee Hoop Classic on Saturday night following the Mustangs’ championship, led the way with 18.

Fortuna 74

Lower Lake 51

At Fortuna, Fortuna broke open a close game at halftime with a 29-8 third quarter and went on to beat the Lower Lake Trojans (3-4). The Huskies sank seven of their 11 3-pointers in the third period.

Dustin Martin’s 18 points led the Trojans and Jerod Alexander had 11.

Lower Lake plays St. Bernard in Eureka today.
