FORT BRAGG >> Middletown High School 138-pounder Jonathon Wilson made coach Brian Hunt’s day on Saturday during the Coast Classic Holiday Bash in Fort Bragg.
The third seed in his weight class, Wilson not only knocked off the No. 2 seed in the semifinals, but he pinned No. 1 seed Josh McKnight of Hoopa, the No. 4-ranked 138-pounder in the North Coast Section, in the second round of their championship match.
“I haven’t been that excited for a wrestling match in a while,” Hunt said of Wilson’s big win. “After that it was all gravy for us. We had a great tournament.”
Wilson is 10-0 on the season, including his four wins at Fort Bragg.
“He’s wrestling like a stud,” Hunt said.
Middletown’s other medal winners were Wyatt Jones, who finished third at 182 pounds; Scott Kelly, who was fourth at 152 pounds, and Jake Samson, who was fifth at 126 pounds.
Just missing a medal was Cameron Ketchum, who placed sixth at 195 pounds.
Wilson wasn’t the only Lake County wrestler to win his weight class at Fort Bragg. Clear Lake’s Julian Lewis prevailed at 220 pounds while teammate Jacob Pyorre came in second at 113 pounds. Isaac Lewis added a sixth-place finish at 152 pounds.
While Clear Lake’s boys went to Fort Bragg on Saturday, Clear Lake’s girls made the long trip to Castro Valley where Emily Psalmonds came in sixth at 111 pounds. After losing in her first match to the No. 2 seed, Psalmonds pinned each of her next four opponents. Because of a match-limit rule, she could not wrestle for fifth place.
