LUCERNE >> A missing persons report has been filed for Lucerne resident and seasoned kayaker Michael Belhumeur, 68, who went missing Tuesday morning after setting out for his daily row on Clear Lake near Sandy Beach Trailer Park.
Wednesday Search and Rescue found his kayak, life jacket and oar near Ceago Winery’s beach, but efforts to find him have not been successful so far.
Terry Knight, the Record-Bee’s outdoors writer, said water temperatures on Tuesday morning were lower than 50 degrees and with winds at 30 to 40 miles per hour, the waves were horrendous. Depending on a person’s health, they may be able to last between 30 minutes and an hour before losing consciousness in those temperatures, he said.
Knight advises those who chose to going boating in the winter to always wear a life jacket and if using a small boat, to not go out alone.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office could not be reached for updated information regarding the investigation. but anyone with information about Belhumeur should call the office at 262-4200.
