MIDDLETOWN >> The battle tested Middletown High School varsity girls’ basketball team is on a bit of a roll after hammering Berean Christian 61-24 in non-league action on Friday night in Middletown.

The Mustangs (7-3) won their fifth straight behind another monster night from post Ashlyn Welton, who scored 19 points to go along with 14 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Abby Aden added 18 points.

“Best stretch of four quarters we’ve put together this season,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said. “Our defense was stifling and our ball movement on offense was outstanding.”

Middletown led 15-4 after one quarter and 32-12 by halftime.

“A good team win,” Bazzano said. “Everybody played a part tonight.”

Sophomore Makenzi Smith turned in a solid overall effort, according to Bazzano. Smith finished with four points, four assists and four steals.

“She is playing so well for us right now,” Bazzano said. “She was all over the place.”

Middletown returns to action Monday night in Petaluma against Casa Grande High School.

“That’s a big game for us,” Bazzano said.

Middletown also won in junior varsity action on Friday as the Mustangs prevailed 40-20 behind 14 points from Callie Wilson and 12 from Brenna Southern.
