EUREKA >> Kelseyville High School 113-pounder Luis Garcia had it all working on Saturday during the North Coast Classic at Eureka High School.
“He dominated,” Kelseyville coach Rob Brown said of Garcia’s 4-0 day on the mats, including three pins leading up to the 113-pound finals.
In an all-Lake County showdown in the championship match, it was Garcia winning by 15-6 decision over Alex Sanchez of Upper Lake.
Garcia entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed.
“It was hard to get him seeded because he has been wrestling at 120 pounds,” Brown said.
Garcia pinned the No. 1 seed from Grants Pass, Oregon, in the semifinals.
Garcia was one of 14 Kelseyville wrestlers to make the trip north to Eureka but the only one to medal, which meant placing in the top five of your weight division.
Four county schools participated in the tournament. Joining Kelseyville and Upper Lake were wrestlers from Clear Lake and Middletown high schools.
Clear Lake’s lone medalist was 220-pound Julian Lewis, who went 3-1 and finished second. His only loss was by 3-1 decision in the finals.
Lewis was one of six Clear Lake wrestlers taking part in the tournament.
Middletown also sent six wrestlers but didn’t have a medalist although Quentin Crayne came close with a sixth-place finish at 115 pounds.
“He should have been fifth,” Middletown coach Brian Hunt said. “I had some issues with the officiating.”
Winning at least two matces were Peter Sullivan, who went 3-2 at 152 pounds, and Scott Kelly, who went 2-2 in the same weight class. Middletown 170-pounder Wyatt Jones finished 2-2.
“He lost to two really good kids,” Hunt said of Jones.
“It was a tough tournament,” Hunt said. “Kids that didn’t medal at the tournament would have been top three in a lot of other tournaments.”
In girls’ action over the weekend, Clear Lake’s Emily Psalmonds finished third in the 111-pound division at the Julie Gonzalez Invitational in Vallejo. She went 2-2 in a round-robin bracket.
