KELSEYVILLE >> Riley Goff buried five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points overall and teammate Heidy Cano’s double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds powered the Kelseyville High School varsity girls’ basketball team to a 49-42 win over the Middletown Mustangs on Tuesday night in Kelseyville.

The Knights improved to 2-1 in league and 8-5 overall with the victory. Middletown fell to 2-1 and 9-6.

“She stepped it up tonight and was competing with their big players very well,” Kelseyville coach Jim Hale said of Cano. “We needed that.”

Middletown had a 41-40 lead in the fourth quarter before Kelseyville pushed back in front to stay. Goff’s final 3-pointer sealed the Knights’ win.

“The three ball was the difference,” Middletown coach Anthony Bazzano said of the sophomore Goff’s five treys.

Alma Perez joined teammates Goff and Cano in double figures with 11 points. Abby Aden led the Mustangs with 12 points and Ashlyn Welton added 11.

“We had a pretty good gameplan and stuck with it,” Hale said.

Cloverdale 62

Lower Lake 39

At Cloverdale, the host Eagles improved to 3-0 in NCL I action with a victory over the Lower Lake Trojans, who were led by Vanessa John’s nine points.

Junior varsity coach Dave Milano filled in for varsity coach Jim Salmina, who missed the game with a bad back.

Lower Lake (1-2, 7-8) trailed 19-7 after one quarter and never recovered.

“Their press hurt us in the first quarter but we handled it pretty well the rest of the game,” Milano said. “We missed a lot shots. We really didn’t shoot the ball well.”

Aleia Milano had eight points for the Trojans.

Clear Lake 49

St. Helena 19

At St. Helena, the Clear Lake Cardinals won their second straight league game, beating the St. Helena Saints behind 22 points from Taylor Helms and 20 from Aliza Atkins. They combined for seven 3-pointers.

“They were hot and they couldn’t stop them,” Clear Lake coach Kory Reynolds said of the Saints’ unsuccessful attempts on defense to slow down Helms and Atkins. “It’s nice to have a one-two punch like that.”

Clear Lake (2-1, 7-8) limited St. Helena (0-3) to no more than five points in any quarter.

“They played really good defense,” Reynolds said of his players.

Jasmine Rice finished with only two points but racked up multiple assists feeding the ball to Helms and Atkins.

“Jasmine kept getting them the ball, making that extra pass,” Reynolds said.

Kelseyville 57

Middletown 53

At Middletown, the Kelseyville Knights won their third straight game, using a 30-17 second half to rally past the Middletown Mustangs, who dropped their second straight league game.

Kelseyville (2-1, 10-4) trailed 36-27 at halftime.

“We were fighting an uphill battle the whole way,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said. “We didn’t take the lead until the final minute.”

Kyle Ellis had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists to power the Knights. Brandon Huber added 15 points, all on 3-pointers, and Victor Fernandez had 12 points.

Conrad also gave high marks to the physical play inside of Tyler Riewerts, who finished with four points and eight rebounds.

“He played one heck of a game,” Conrad said. “It was a very physical game and we handled that physicality well.”

Anthonie Guzman’s 19 points led Middletown (1-2, 7-4) and Cody Chorjel added 18.

St. Helena 76

Clear Lake 67 (2OT)

At Lakeport, the Clear Lake Cardinals led by double figures in the fourth quarter but ended up losing a double-overtime battle to the St. Helena Saints, who improved to 2-1 in league play behind a 36-point night from Chris Saladin.

Tied at 60 at the end of regulation and at 65 after the first overtime, momentum swung to the Saints in the second extra period as they outscored the Cardinals (0-3, 5-10) by an 11-2 margin.

Saladin scored 18 of his 36 points in the fourth quarter and two overtime periods.

“I asked them to leave it all on the floor and they did,” Clear Lake coach Scott De Leon said of his team’s play. “In a close ballgame you can’t make mistakes and we made a few too many. We just need to learn how to finish. We’re working hard and we’ll get there.”

Clear Lake (1-2, 6-9) was led by Jared Strate and Ryan Smith, each with 17 points. Damian Lopez had 10.

Sonoma Academy 71

Upper Lake 34

At Santa Rosa, the Upper Lake Cougars fell to 0-3 in the NCL II standings and 0-13 overall after falling to the Sonoma Academy Coyotes.

Chase Goetjen led the Cougars with 10 points.
