KELSEYVILLE >> Haleigh Meyer has given her coach a few things to think about after scoring a team-leading 14 points for the Kelseyville Knights in a 64-52 loss to Kennedy High School of Richmond on Saturday night during a non-league varsity girls’ basketball game at Kelseyville.
Meyer, filling in for an absent starter in each of the Knights’ last two games, also scored a team-high 19 points on Friday in a 61-31 league rout of Willits.
“It’s a good problem to have,” Kelseyville coach Jim Hale said of Meyer’s offensive production coming off the bench. “It’s something I’ll have to take a look at.”
Kelseyville (10-7) trailed 10-0 against Kennedy (11-10) before getting back even with a 12-2 run. The Eagles forged ahead 19-16 by the end of the period.
Kennedy’s speed and the scoring punch provided by senior guard Destanee Alexander (32 points) enabled the Eagles to open things up by halftime at 37-24.
“Their speed kind of took over the game,” Hale said. “She (Alexander) is a real good player.”
Kennedy increased its lead to 57-35 after three quarters before Kelseyville was able to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter.
“I think it was good for the girls to see that kind of competition,” Hale said of the Eagles, who play in a league that features powerhouse Salesian. “Even in the middle of our league schedule, I think that was a win for us as far as the competition we faced.”
Meyer led a balanced Kelseyville attack. Riley Goff finished with eight points, Alma Perez added seven and Carli Mendonca had six.
The Knights resume their North Central League I schedule — they are 4-2 and in a four-way tie for second place, one game behind 5-1 Middletown — tonight at St. Helena (0-6). Tonight’s game marks the midway point of the NCL I race. Junior varsity aciton tips off at 5:30 p.m.
