TOMALES >> The Upper Lake Cougars hung in there for a half before bowing 47-30 to the Tomales Braves in the North Central League II opener for both of these varsity boys’ basketball teams on Wednesday night in Tomales.

A 22-6 third quarter turned out to be the difference in the game as Upper Lake (0-1 league, 0-11 overall) was still much in this one at halftime trailing 19-12.

“Our defense, hustle and effort in the first half was outstanding,” Upper Lake coach Justin Dutcher said. “But we couldn’t buy a bucket.”

Chase Goetjen had six points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars. Freshman Cody Rybolt added four points and 12 rebounds.

Tomales beat Upper Lake in the junior varsity game. No results were reported.
