LOWER LAKE >> The Hero Project celebrated its first Minibaloo on January 28 at The Game Hub in Lower Lake. The family-friendly game night featured free tabletop games to play, free pizza, and free age-appropriate comic books for all attendees. Kyle Fehr, owner of both The Game Hub and DJ’s Pizza, donated the use of the Game Hub, the pizza, and gave every family in attendance a free game to take home.
In January the Hero Project challenged families to spend 30 minutes of play together, at least twice per week. The American Academy of Pediatrics confirms that regular playtime gives children a better ability to succeed academically. Nearly 60 families completed January’s challenge. These families are set to receive a free package of play equipment. This package will include a jump rope, a tabletop ping pong set, sidewalk chalk, and more. One family will win a $150 gift certificate to Lakeside Family Fun Center.
During playtime children learn about themselves, learn about others, and ultimately become masters of their universe. Fehr says, “Play is actually very personal to me. I want to show parents that it’s important to spend time playing with their kids. Sure, playing sports is great, but some kids just aren’t interested in sports. I know I wasn’t. By playing tabletop games as a kid I learned patience and good sportsmanship.” The Game Hub sells countless tabletop games, video games, books, and more. In addition, they offer several free-to-play games. “I open my store to anyone who wants to come and play tabletop games. I have a whole shelf devoted to free-play. Families are welcome to stop in and play any of our tabletop games for free, anytime my shop is open,” adds Fehr.
In February, Hero Project participants are encouraged to set parenting goals and take the POP (Parent on Purpose) Challenge. Challenge Champions will receive a free POP journal. Any individual who has influence over a child aged 0-8, and that resides in Lake County, can participate in the Hero Project. Hullabaloo and Minibaloo events happen throughout the school year.
