UKIAH >> The Mendocino College Foundation will award 11 new scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 for the upcoming school year. Those scholarships are four for nursing majors with a priority given to coastal residents; three for agriculture/business majors; two for re-entry women; one for an automotive major and one for a student majoring in natural resources.

The scholarships have been made possible through donations.

“On behalf of the foundation board, we are incredibly grateful to these new donors for their philanthropic support and understanding that sometimes as little as $500 will keep a student in school and positively moving toward their educational goal,” foundation director and scholarship committee chair Jerry Chaney stated.

The perpetual LaRue Kobrin Memorial Scholarship will provide four $1,000 scholarships for students enrolled in the college’s nursing program with a priority being given to students who reside on the Mendocino Coast. Kobrin was a long-time coastal resident who was a devoted teacher who believed everyone deserved an opportunity to succeed.

American AgCredit has provided three $1,000 scholarships for students pursuing a degree in the agriculture/business field. An important part of their mission is to support students and emerging farmers in Lake and Mendocino counties. American AgCredit provides annual scholarships to students who might someday be the next winery, timber or orchard owner.

The Fionna and Richard Perkins Scholarship at the Community Foundation provides for two $500 scholarships for re-entry women. The Perkins’ are active in the Coast Community Library and Fionna Perkins was poet laureate of Point Arena in 2000.

The Ukiah Early Iron Car Club is sponsoring one $1,000 scholarship for an automotive major. The Car Club is dedicated to family enjoyment with an interest in restoration, preservation and enjoyment of collector automobiles. Proceeds from its annual Fabulous Flashback Car Show funded this student scholarship.

Hawthorne Timber Company is providing one $2,000 scholarship for a current or transferring student who is majoring in natural resources.

The scholarship application period at Mendocino College will close on Feb. 27, 2015 at 4 p.m. For more information about the scholarship program, contact Lana Eberhard at 467-1018 or leberhard@mendocino.edu.
