CALISTOGA >> Renee Edwards allowed just two hits and no earned runs as the Middletown Mustangs rolled past the Calistoga Wildcats 14-1 in a non-league five-inning softball game on Tuesday in Calistoga.
Edwards, one of only four returning players on a young 2015 Middletown squad, also went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
“We have two freshmen and eight new players,” Middletown coach Barry Glosser said.
Middletown’s youth revealed itself last week in a scrimmage against Lower Lake, according to Glosser.
“We scrimmaged Lower Lake and we were as nervous as we could be,” Glosser said. “It’s good that we were able to get it out of our system. Our play today was like night and day.”
Middletown had a 14-0 lead before Calistoga finally scored in the bottom of the fifth. The Mustangs had five-run third and fourth innings to go up 11-0.
Hannah Flynn, one of the few remaining veterans on the 12-player roster, went 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and three RBIs. Mackenzie Harris and Mallory Wisely added two hits apiece in the season opener.
“Our defense was solid and our baserunning was good … we put it all together,” Glosser said.
Throw in 17 hits by Middletown and 13 strikeouts and only one walk by Edwards and it was certainly the Mustangs’ day.
Middletown returns to action Friday against El Molino in Forestville at 3:30 p.m.
