Lake County >> Have you ever watched a play and thought, “Gee, those actors sure look like they’re having fun, but I could never commit all that time or learn all those lines?” Are you a fan of live theater and would like to try your hand at directing, but haven’t had the chance yet? If so, the Lake County Theatre Company (LCTC) has an opportunity for you.
LCTC is thrilled to announce its next production, “A Night of One Acts.” Unlike their other shows, which tell one story and last two hours, this will actually consist of several short plays, or one-acts.
“We are hoping to put on between three and five short one-acts, each lasting between 10 and 30 minutes,” explained Laura Barnes, the show’s producer. LCTC is seeking new directors and actors for this project.
“What’s cool about this production is that it’s much less demanding and time-consuming for the actors and directors, so it’s a great chance for new people to give it a try and see if they enjoy it, without having to commit to a full-blown production,” added Barnes. “Normally we require those interested in directing to assistant direct a play first. But for this production, we are setting that requirement aside. Since one-acts are smaller and less complicated, we are confident that anyone with the desire to direct can be successful in this project.”
New directors won’t simply be left to figure it out on their own. Tim Barnes, director of the Rocky Horror Show (2010, Lakeport Fairgrounds), Mindgame (2012, Lower Lake Schoolhouse Museum) and assistant director of The Bad Seed (2009, Clear Lake High School), will act as a mentor to new directors, offering advice and suggestions as needed. New directors will also be in on the process of selecting which plays will be performed.
“All of the interested directors will sit together and select which scripts we like,” said Tim Barnes. “Hopefully we will have some serious, some funny and some in between. We are also open to original plays that are written by local authors.” The first directors’ meeting and play selection will take place on March 7.
Auditions for those interested in being actors in the Night of One Acts will take place in late March or early April after directors and plays have been chosen. The Night of One Acts is scheduled for the second and third weekend of June.
