MIDDLETOWN >> Santa Rosa scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to snap 2-2 tie and went on to beat the Middletown Mustangs 8-2 in non-league varsity baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Wes Martin Field.
It was the season opener for the Mustangs (0-1), who scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth after the Panthers pushed across two runs in the top half of the inning.
Tyler Showen, the third of four Middletown pitchers, took the loss in relief. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, struck out one and walked two.
All five of Middletown’s hits were singles — one each by Showen, Brett Pike, Cody Chorjel, Albert Ruske and John Kelly. Chorjel and Ruske knocked in Middletown’s runs.
“Our depth and pitching are a tad on the thin side but our defense did a good job keeping it close until late,” Middletown coach Brad Holt said. “We made a couple of mistakes near the end that cost us.”
Holt said he likes the composition of the 2015 team.
“I think we’re on the right track,” he said. “I’m really happy with what they did today.”
