LAKEPORT >> Father and son Kelly and Kyle Maughs of Kelseyville found the fishing much to their liking on Saturday and Sunday during the 28th annual Clear Lake Team Bass Tournament. They brought 65.96 pounds to the scales to win a total of $6,000.
The Maughs brought in 25.96 pounds on Saturday and another 40 pounds on Sunday to top the 111-team field and win the $5,000 first prize. They earned an additional $1,000 for catching the big fish — 10.27 pounds — on Sunday.
Brian Bailey of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Paul Bailey of Kelseyville finished second with 62.71 pounds to win $3,000.
Other top-10 team finishers were Kyle Ray and Robert Thornton, 59.97 pounds, $1,500; Dale Ball and Fred Rex, 58.48 pounds, $1,250; David and Jacob Card, 57.05 pounds, $1,000; Chad Hole and Junior Beatty, 54.55 pounds, $900; Jeff Michels and Justin Regelin, 53.83 pounds, $800; Art Naverud and Jim Kimura, 52.43 pounds, $750; Matt Saavedra and Charles Almassey, 51.68 pounds, $700; Mike Rothstein and Adam Martin, 51.03 pounds, $625.
The top 10 teams in the field brought 50-plus pounds to the scales. Some huge bass were taken, including three of 10 pounds or more, eight of nine pounds or more, and 10 of eight pounds or more.
Twenty-one teams placed in the money, which required a weight of 45.26 pounds. The overall average weight per fish was 4.16 pounds.
The big fish of the tournament, 10.6 pounds, was caught by John and Jim McGrath. They finished 21st in the standings and earned $1,200 overall.
The tournament is sponsored by the Lake County Chamber of Commerce and Konocti Vista Casino.
